Summary Of Barbara Of The House Of Grebe - 769 Words
Alison Moretti ENG 243 ââ¬â Short Paper #2 ââ¬Å"Barbara of the House of Grebeâ⬠Thomas Hardy explored the workings of degeneration is his Gothic tale, ââ¬Å"Barbara of the House of Grebeâ⬠(1891). Degeneration, which flourished during the Victorian Era (1837-1901), supposed that certain groups, including the urban poor, the mentally ill, prostitutes, criminals, assumed the traits of their surrounding to adjust to immoral, polluted cities, becoming physically and mentally flawed in the process. Degeneration was used by Victorians to act against others they labeled as abject. In the book, the abject degenerates are working-class men and upper-class women who were subjected to classism and sexism rationalized by degeneration. Hardy shows how belief in the myth of degeneration could ruin relationships and lives. Like the stereotypical upper-class male of her time, Barbara possesses a sense of the erotic that rests on beauty. That is how her class and gender prejudices intersect, causing her to feminize her working-class husband. Barbara makes it clear, more t han once, that she wants someone that is consistent with her babyish and youthful features. ââ¬Å"She could no how fancy this to be her chosen one ââ¬â the man she had loved; he was metamorphosed to a specimen of another speciesâ⬠(232). This quote supports abject degeneration because she, as an upper-class woman wants someone to compliment her exterior image and he as a working-class man now feels sorrowful that he can no longer give her what

Strategic Management and Unilever free essay sample
The objective of this report is to provide an overview and examination of the Personal Products Industry ââ¬â covering industry structure, competitors, past and future performance trends, and conclusions about attractiveness for incumbents. Additional objectives include a competitor analysis, comparing Procter Gamble and Unilever, an examination of their strategies, and recommendations for future growth and sustainability. Our analysis includes global operations, financial results, market share and current initiatives. Information for these analyses was derived from library databases, internet searches and company websites. Industry Defined The industry segment chosen for this analysis has been assigned the SIC code 2844 entitled Perfumes, Cosmetics and other Toilet Preparations. Companies within this industry have referred to this market segment as the Personal Products Industry. A complete list of the products included in this industry has been provided in Appendix A.The SIC 2844 category, when converted to the new North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) was further divided into 2 categories, 325620 (Toilet Preparation Manufacturing) and 325611 (Soap and Other Detergent Manufacturing). We will write a custom essay sample on Strategic Management and Unilever or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page The global personal products market encompasses fragrances, hair care, make-up, oral hygiene, personal hygiene, and skincare products. This highly competitive industry will ââ¬Å"derive its future performance relative to global consumer spending patterns and raw material prices. â⬠1 In 2005, the leading revenue source in this market was hair care, accounting for 25. percent of the global value (See Appendix B). 2 This industry has recently been affected by rising commodity costs which, coupled with increased marketing spending, put significant pressure on operating margins and earnings in 2005. Earnings per share (EPS) were expected to improve by 2006, as commodity costs began to stabilize. 3 For an analysis of the Industry Structure, Porters 5 Forces Model4 has been used and provided in Appendix C. The result of this analysis reveals strong barriers to entry, moderate bargaining powerTrends and Industry Outlook The household products and personal care segments are expected to be the stronger within the US consumer products industry ââ¬â entering 2006 with a strong financial profile. These segments are characterized as having well-supported, strong brands and superior product development, commanding premium pricing in sectors that are less cyclical. 14 Two events that dominated the landscape in 2005 for consumer product companies will also have an impact on future performance ââ¬â the continuation of raw material cost escalations, which in turn prompted P;G and Unilever 4 rice increase announcements, and significant mergers or pending mergers among them, P;Gââ¬â¢s acquisition of Gillette. Many companies instituted cost reduction programs, but in the end, few companies were able to fully offset raw materials cost escalation. In addition, industry competition in the f orm of advertising has ratcheted upward, largely due to the strong influence of P;G in 2005. 15 Changes affecting the demographics and demands of the consumer, such as the aging baby boomers causing an increase in the demand for age-defying skin care and hair color, or animal rights activists protesting animal testing, directly affect the industry. The growing need for compliance with more stringent environmental regulations, and the consumer demand for natural and organic products, have also changed how products are produced, requiring additional investment and expanded product lines. Keeping up with changing wants and needs of the consumer in order to remain competitive in this industry increases the need for investment in research and development. Globalization and the growing ethnic population in the US will also continue to broaden the industry and create new market segments. Not only the US economy, but also the global economy, will affect sales for items not considered a necessity, such as some cosmetics, perfumes, and household items. The consumer will continue to be influenced by price and convenience for most products. ââ¬Å"There is a close correlation between a countryââ¬â¢s consumption of soaps and detergents and its standard of living. â⬠16 Trends in how consumers shop also affect the industry. Beginning in the 1990s into the 2000s, consumers began purchasing these types of products at mass discount centers, such as Costco and Samââ¬â¢s Club, rather than at upscale department stores. 7 These macro-level factors ââ¬â environmental regulations (government), the global economy, the cost of raw materials, global competition, innovations in research, consumer demographics, and the ever changing wants and needs of the consumer ââ¬â will continue to impact the performance of companies in this industry. Companies expected to fare well in the future are those with strong momentum from earlier and successful restructuring actions whose cost savings are ramping up quickly, with less exposure to specific raw materials, and with balance sheet flexibility. 18 P;G and Unilever 5Strategic Challenges and Opportunities As mergers and acquisitions continue, this industry will likely become more consolidated, which, along with strong entry barriers and substantial rivalry among existing members, will favor sustainability for incumbents. Cost and availability of raw materials may continue to pose a threat to smaller firms lacking adequate capital reserves to compensate for a dditional costs. Future performance in this industry will be tied to global consumer spending patterns and raw material prices. Expansion into global markets will be important for future growth. As is seen by the trends in imports and exports provided in Appendices L and M, expansion into the global market is not new to this industry. ââ¬Å"Low consumption of household products in emerging markets ââ¬â such as China and India ââ¬â represents an opportunity for companies to expand their revenues and escape from the stale performance of their home markets. â⬠19 The fastest growing and emerging markets include the Pacific Rim20, Latin America, and Eastern Europe21 (see Appendix N). While the Asia-Pacific area is noted to be a key emerging market for this industry, one of the main hindrances in this area has been low income. 2 Products designed for areas with higher incomes may not be suitable for emerging markets; thus companies desiring to expand into this region will need to invest in development of products that can be priced more affordably. A global expansion study would be recommended to determine which countries would provide the best opportunity. The expanding US Market for natural and organic personal care products is an opportunity for industry to provide products for a growing consumer want and need. Most US Consumers are willing to pay, and are used to paying, a higher price for natural and organic products. If the personal products industry can find ways to produce natural and organic products at reasonable costs, the profit margins on such products are expected to be greater than their non-organic counterparts. Industry Conclusions The attractiveness of the Personal Products industry includes such elements as steady growth in consumer demand and repeat purchase of the products, since most are consumables. Some larger current producers are achieving economies of scale, brand loyalty, and first mover advantage. Other smaller P;G and Unilever 6 producers have developed a market niche for a specific consumer need and have been successful. Strategic Management and Unilever free essay sample Introduction: Unilever is a multinational corporation with ââ¬Å"extensive product offerings in the food, detergent, and personal care business.â⬠Because Unilever is organizing its companies on a decentralized structure, they are falling behind their competitors. In order for Unilever to succeed as a company they must look over their whole business strategy starting from their foundation and working their way through each and every subsidiary. In making minor adjustments for improvement, Unilever might pull through and have a chance of becoming a successful company once again. Case Problems: Unilever is facing many problems not only within the company but with competition as well. ââ¬Å"Competitors are more successful by building global brands, reducing cost structure, and executing simultaneous product launches in several national markets.â⬠In Unileverââ¬â¢s case, the decentralized structure is working against any efforts of building both global and regional brands. Because of many duplicates in ââ¬Å"manufacturing, a lack of scale economies, and a high-cost structure,â⬠they are trailing behind competitors in bringing new products to the market. We will write a custom essay sample on Strategic Management and Unilever or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Alternatives: One alternative Unilever could take would be to focus more on the products that bring in the most profit. In this case it would be the food products, which account for ââ¬Å"60 percent of sales and include strong offerings in margarine, tea, ice cream, frozen foods, and bakery products.â⬠Mainly because not everyone is willing or able to buy name brands or certain detergents, but there will always be a need for food. If they put more of their focus on this they would be able to exceed the already 70 percent of market share in other countries. The only downfall I see in this would be the extra profit that would normally come in from the other two options would decrease. Another alternative Unilever might consider might be to focus its detergents and personal care products in accordance to the needs and wants of communities in certain areas. For example, while one country might see it more fit to have Omo, another region might prefer the personal care products of Calvin Klein. In researching the area and what customers seem more comfortable with would help enhance sales. However, if the company would be willing to invest both time and money in doing this would be upon them. A third alternative would be for the companyââ¬â¢s financial and marketing team to use the SWOT analysis. By using this, the company would get a better understanding of their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. This would give them the chance to take advantage of what they are doing well while also showing them what exactly they should focus on to improve. Again, it would just be whether the company is willing to take the time and money to put int o the analysis. Solutions: Unilever ââ¬Å"introduced a new structure based on regional business groups.â⬠By creating groups and divisions in the company, each team was able to focus on a specific category of products. In doing so ââ¬Å"groups and divisions coordinated the activities of national subsidiaries within their region to drive down operation costs and speed up the process of developing and introducing new products.â⬠However, even with this change in structure, Unilever was still lagging behind the competition. Therefore, the company cut the number of brands sold ââ¬Å"from 1,600 to 400 that could be marketed on a regional or global scale.â⬠They also ââ¬Å"reduced manufacturing plants from 380 to about 280.â⬠Even after proceeding with this new foundation, they were still behind the competition. Unilever then decided to establish just two global product divisions. This included a ââ¬Å"food division and a home and personal care division.â⬠Contingency: If the solutions and changes made to the company fail, one back-up plan would be to cut out either the food or home and personal care division. That way the company would be able to focus on just one certain area. In doing so they would cut back even more products and brands, as well asà reducing manufacturing plants even more. This would help cut not only labor costs, but operating costs as well. As far as competition goes, Unilever would fall behind competing companies even more, therefore, instead of going for a global business, they should start back locally and overtime work their way back up. If they keep going at the rate they are, the company would take a bigger fall and might be harder for it to bounce back. Overtime, as they work on building the business then they can look into adding the other division, and then eventually work into competition globally once again. Conclusion: Unilever took a big step in trying to change and improve the company. Most businesses find it hard to accept change and thatââ¬â¢s always the downfall to any great company. As far as the competition goes, Unilever has a lot to catch up on. They fell to far behind other competitors and suffered greatly from this. As long as Unilever stays patient with building their company up to what it once was, I feel that they will have no problem accomplishing a very successful company overtime.

What is art free essay sample
Art cannot be defined simply, there has been numerous definitions offered throughout the decades but it is if I may, impossible to pin point one that define art perfectly because it is so broad. If I had to define all that art is will probably exceed an essay, but a book will do Just fine. Since we cannot cover all that art Is In one essay, we will cover the main ideas about It. Paintings, photography, architecture, and sculptures, they are the basics of art, and then there are others that define some as art, and some will reject those as art.Such as personal art, In which they might mean an Infinite amount personally, but It may only be something very common to the critiques of others. Art Is a personal definition All that art Is may not always be art. For example, art Is freedom of expression, It brings Joy, sadness, and It takes a person though the emotion of the artist. We will write a custom essay sample on What is art? or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page It creates clarity and confusion but clarity and confusion Is not art. Art Is an escape but escape is not art. Art is creativity but creativity is not art.Art can make you smile and laugh, one of my favorite artists named Roomer Britton gives me great ay when I see his art, its colorful and not everyone can do, the creative ways in which he uses lines, color, etc. His art has purposes; they are displayed in childrens hospitals. Art is meaningful. Some art takes you too certain place or time, whether youve been there before or not. Art can be a memory, whether it is a happy or sad one, it makes you remember the emotion you were in while you created the certain piece or it might help you understand the emotion of the artist, the things they were going through and their thoughts.Art is nostalgic. Art helps you get through painful times and in the pain raises brilliant works. One can very well argue that those are the only good that comes out of tragedy, art includes experience and an individual can confine in art while they have no one else to confine with. Art is therapy. Although this is not all that art is but it is what relates to most of us and it is something in which most of us can relate to. Art is personal and global at the same time. It might only be understood by one person, although it might very well be understood globally.

grrek essays
grrek essays The basis of Greek drama was a religious festival, which paid homage to Dyonicis, god of wine and fertility. Greek drama consisted of a protagonist, the main character, of noble birth whose life is full of happiness in the beginning, but ends up in agony in the end due to their tragic flaw or weakness. To provide all the background information about the characters and the play the chorus was also an important part in a Greek drama. Even now, these elements can still be found in a play or a television sitcom. A good example of a Greek drama is the Pilot episode of the HBO show Six Feet Under. The episode begins with a commercial about a glamorous hearse. The commercial divides the acts of the episode. Before a new act begins, the commercial provides the audience with the information about a product, which will be used in the act. The commercials are a part of the episode, but at the same time, it provides the audience with background information like the chorus did in the Greek dramas. After the hearse commercial Nathaniel Fisher, the owner of the Fisher and Sons Funeral Home, is introduced. It is Christmas Eve in Los Angeles and Nathaniel is on his way to pick up his oldest son Nate in his new hearse from the airport. Then his cell phone rings and the audience are introduced to his wife Ruth. She nags at him for not taking his vitamins and for smoking in the new hearse. She tells Nathaniel if he keeps on smoking he will end up dying a slow and horrible death which foreshadows the accident Nathaniel is about to get into. At the same time, she is serving her second son, Dave, breakfast. Dave is telling his mom it was a mistake to let his father take the new hearse. She then reminds Nathaniel about the time when Nate got a new motorcycle and how he still has a pin in his foot which is foreshadowing the accident again. The ironic thing is Nathaniel is listening and singing along to the song Ill Be Home for C...

Unit 3 -IP- Samples - Essay Example In order to test whether the two variables have the same means, a two ââ¬â sample, two ââ¬â sided t ââ¬â test must be performed. The two - tailed test is used because the concern is not whether some variable has a larger or lower mean, but whether the two means are different. As a result, the null hypothesis was established in equation (1) below, stating that the difference in means of the two samples is random. Since the sample sizes are relatively small, the t ââ¬â test is used as the preferred test (Baltagi, 2008, p.31). The confidence interval is constructed in order to test this hypothesis. The confidence set with confidence level must be determined such that the true difference of the sample means is included in this set. What this implies is that the confidence set will include the true difference of population means with probability ââ¬Å"at least â⬠(Paolella, 2011, p. 13), as shown in equation (3) below: The confidence level chosen is 0.95, which implies that the corresponding confidence set will contain the true population mean difference with 95% probability (Paolella, 2011, p.13). The probability of rejecting the null hypothesis when it is true is as a result 5% (Baltagi, 2008, p.21). This error is denoted as type I error. The larger the confidence interval, the larger the probability that the null hypothesis will be accepted when it is in fact false (Baltagi, 2008, p.22). This error is denoted as type II error. A t ââ¬â score must be calculated by subtracting the sample means and dividing by the square root of the adjusted population variances, which can be estimated through sample variances. There are in total degree of freedom (Neustadl, n.d.). The resulting t ââ¬â value is à ± 2.009, which is also the critical region (Dawson, 2012;Ruud, 2000, p.224). The t ââ¬â test can be seen in equation (4) below: The t ââ¬â test is preferred because of the data dependence. Both variables have in common the type of
